As a member of the board of directors for APLA Health, I help make strategic decisions about the future of a nonprofit organization that provides health care and HIV support services to thousands of people from underserved communities in Los Angeles County.  I know firsthand that it can be a challenge to rally people behind our mission—just as it’s a challenge to ensure we continue to make strides toward ending the AIDS epidemic once and for all.

APLA Health has been on the frontlines of fighting the epidemic for 34 years, and that is part of the reason we are so proud to be partnering with Project Angel Food in bringing Dining Out for Life back to Los Angeles. Dining out for Life’s tagline says it all: Dine Out. Fight AIDS.  It’s a simple act that has far-reaching effects. After all, who doesn’t love sharing a meal with friends and/or loved ones? It speaks of warmth, camaraderie, and generosity, and allows everyone a moment to relax. On April 27, it also means that by dining out you will be giving back to your neighbors in a concrete way. By making a reservation at a participating restaurant, you help APLA Health and Project Angel Food continue to provide critically important services that literally help keep people alive.

I personally know so many people who have benefitted from the health care and social support services APLA Health provides. As a board member—and as someone active in my own community—I want to make sure everyone who needs our help can continue to get it—especially as we face a very uncertain future.

For those who have long supported us, this is a fun, new way to continue that tradition. For those who may be new to supporting us, what better way to get to know us while doing good for people in our city?  Ending the AIDS epidemic and ensuring people have access to care to make that happen are ambitious goals. We are committed to seeing them happen. We invite you to be part of it by joining us for a meal on April 27.  I’ll see you there.
