The openly gay mayor of South Bend, Indiana has announced his intention to run for President in 2020.

Pete Buttigieg joined the race with an email announcement and a campaign video, focusing on the need for a fresh start and looking towards the future rather than the past.

“The reality is there’s no going back, and there’s no such thing as ‘again’ in the real world,” he says, undoubtedly referencing Trump’s controversial “Make America Great Again” slogan. “We can’t look for greatness in the past.”

“I belong to a generation that is stepping forward right now.”

The 37-year-old was elected mayor of his town when he was just 29, and served in Afghanistan a couple years later.

In 2015, Buttigieg came out as gay, and went on to win re-election by a large margin. He married his now-husband, Chasten Glezman, last summer.

If he were to beat out the other candidates, he would be the first openly gay presidential nominee from a major political party.

The likelihood of Buttigieg going from being the mayor of a town of 100,000 people to getting the Democratic nomination seems improbable, but we wound up with a reality TV host for President, so really anything is possible at this point.
