Broadway And Film Actor Marcus Bellamy Sent To Prison For Manslaughter

A former Broadway dancer and film star has recently been convicted for the murder of his boyfriend.

Back in 2016, Marcus Bellamy, who served as the Dance Captain in Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, was arrested and charged with the August murder of his roommate and boyfriend Bernardo Almonte.

Almonte’s body was found strangled after allegedly fighting in their Bronx apartment. It was Bellamy who contacted a neighbor after the fight. That neighbor then called the police. When the cops arrived, Bellamy was there waiting and surrendered peacefully.

Bellamy’s case was even more alarming when you take into account his social media posts. On the day of the murder, Bellamy shared several strange posts on Facebook. All of which are still standing, and public, today.

Many of these posts express Bellamy’s grief and remorse as well as stories that God gave him a divine message. But the posts then spiral into an incoherent mess.

And in an ironic twist of fate, Bellamy had acted in a horror film just a few months before the crime. The indie film followed Thomas (played by Bellamy) who’s an artist with a BDSM kink. He meets Lee (Joe MacDougal) and the two take on a sexual relationship painted with race play, but soon that “play” turns dark.

After news got out of Bellamy’s arrest, the film’s cast and crew expressed shock at the actor’s deeds.

“Never could any of us have imagined that something like this would happen,” said director Daniel Armando. “Dane [Joseph, the writer,] and Marcus went to high school together. Dane introduced Marcus to Manhattan when Marcus first started at Juilliard.”

“It’s been an emotional rollercoaster for Dane and everyone in the cast, reconciling what our friend has done and sending prayers to the family affected by the tragedy. We’re still piecing it all together and, more than anything, want to send positive love and light to everyone impacted.”

During the trial, Bellamy told the court:

“I want to apologize to the family. Bernardo was very special, and he didn’t deserve what happened to him. You asked me why. Your son and I used to smoke a lot of crystal meth together. On this day, I thought your son was the devil. I didn’t want to do what I did. I want to make that clear. I loved Bernardo. He took me out of my depression. I didn’t mean to destroy somebody.”

In response, Almonte's mother said in court, “No human being deserves to die the way you killed my son. It was inhuman. For no reason. He was taken away, and I still don’t know why. This is a question only you can answer for me: Why did you kill my son?”

Now, the New York Daily News reports that Marcus Bellamy is headed to prison for a term of 20 years.
